Gears and Skill Mechanism

How we deliver our Social Value objectives of training & employment within our local communities.

A & E Elkins Ltd are experienced in working closely with the London communities in which we work, to create local opportunities, provide sponsorship, take the lead and develop community projects, engage with local communities to improve local environments and provide apprenticeship placements.

Apprenticeships

We endeavour to offer 1 Apprenticeship per £2.5m of spend as a minimum with any new client . We will look to increase this as our collaborative partnership with the Client grows.

Our apprenticeship positions are always given to local-residents. These have included those from socially excluded groups and young people not in education. All have successfully completed their role specific NVQ’s with over 95% going into long term employment with A&E Elkins or their Suppliers

Opportunities we offer
• Training and Apprenticeships in Resident Liaison; Site Management; Window Fitting, Roofing, Electrical and Heating Engineering

Where we are unable to offer direct employment or an apprenticeship, we will liaise with our Supply Chain and Sub-Contractors to agree placements. This is a system that we already in place which has seen many success stories.

Who we engage with

•  Local Housing Officers and T&RA representatives to identify the needs of residents who may benefit from a work placement.
•  Local schools to discuss the construction industry, training and apprenticeship opportunities with pupils of school leaving age.
•  We work in partnership with the Job Centre attending local job fairs.

Opportunities will be advertised at events such as community initiatives such as estate fun days, job interview and training excercies, in monthly newsletters to estates where we are working, at resident meetings and through our existing Community recruitment partners.

Financial Resilience

We put great emphasis on using local labour and sub-contractors. Site managers and our management are encouraged to actively source local enterprises. This helps regenerate those areas whilst reducing environmental impact. We ensure that smaller businesses and sole traders seeking opportunities to distinguish themselves are given the chance to join our preferred contractor list. We give assistance to those who have never completed a PQQ before. We also give guidance where they need to improve on issues such as Health and Safety and Insurances. Over 60% of our tradesmen, suppliers and sub-contractors are based within London’s most deprived Boroughs.
